"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen.  The man who never reads only lives one."
 -George R.R. Martin

Being a first generation Portuguese-American, my first language was not English.  Reading books together was not something my parents encouraged.  Instead, my parents instilled love, respect, kindness, moral values and how to reap the benefits of hard work.  No fault to them but reading was something encouraged only when I started school.

My very first memory of reading a book independently was in the second grade.  The book I chose was Black Beauty.  WOW! The ability to enter into a different world just by opening the cover of a book was something I could not get enough of.  The American Girl Doll, Babysitters Club and Boxcar Children, among other books were some of my top favorites.  Silent reading time was my most cherished time of the school day.  I always wished I could bring out a book to recess!

Well fast forward many, many years, and reading is still my all time favorite activity to do.  Besides a period of three years between the birth of my son and daughter and another 2 years in graduate school, my reading list had consisted of 40-50 books a year.  I still don't get to read has much as I used to (you know mommy duties always comes first), but as my kids are getting older and more independent, I've been able to read more.

I like all genres, chick-lit and historical non-fiction are probably my top two favorites, followed by contemporary fiction, romance, memoirs and historical middle-grade fiction. Although some of my most cherished novels are classics (The Grapes of Wrath and The Great Gatsby), that would have to be my least favorite genre.  Sorry to all you classic lovers out there!

Listed below are some of my all time favorite novels:

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
Castle of Water by Dane Hucklebridge
Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan
Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan
Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Hugette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune by Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell Jr.
She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

I look forward to documenting my reviews on this blog and can't wait to dive into this literary world with all of you!

Happy Reading!
